As we previously discussed, people often feel skepticism towards lawyers, because they believe attorneys charge too much, live an “other” lifestyle, and sometimes act in Machiavellian fashion, representing clients for money and/or prestige without really caring about the ethics or ideals at stake.
However, most people wouldn’t speak poorly about the surgeon saving the life of the drunkard, the thief, or the sociopath, so why is there so much hostility towards our profession?
According a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, only 18 percent of participants believed that lawyers contribute “a lot” to society. It is sad to me that so many people fail to see the good and noble work that lawyers do to keep families intact, resolve disputes, ensure law and order, help businesses to function, and make the world a better and safer place to live.
Real People, Real Profession
Lawyers have faults just like anyone else. However, there are also great lawyers who do good deeds, both small and large, every day. These lawyers protect you when you’ve been in an accident, guide you through your divorce, and ensure tat you work under equal conditions.
If you don’t believe lawyers have contributed to society, attend a same-sex marriage and revel in the joy of the newlyweds. Look at the desegregated school your child attends. Lawyers make advances like this possible.
